250th Anniversary Celebrations!

For people attending the Parish celebration “They Arrived” on 30th of June, the following is the program for the day’s activities.

There will be a worship service led by Right Reverend Sandra Fyfe, Anglican Bishop of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, at 11 am followed by a luncheon for the parish.

At 1:30pm afternoon activities will get underway.  There will be displays of artifacts and information on Island genealogy all afternoon, as well as games of the settlers’ period for the kids and other fun activities.

There will be a program of four historical talks commencing at 2:00 pm.  Each talk will run for approximately 20 minutes and be followed by a 10-minute Q+A session.  There will be breaks between the speakers and light refreshments provided.

Our first speaker just after 2:00 pm will be the Parish’s own Thomas Haslam, who will speak on early Anglicanism on the Island and provide an idea of what the church looked like at that time.

John Cousins, who wrote the important study of the New London Settlement, The Lost Dream, will speak at approximately 2:45 and provide an overview of the Settlement and the pioneers who arrived 250 years ago in the summer of 1774.

Thirdly, Dr. Edward MacDonald OC of UPEI will talk at approximately 3:25 about the overall social and economic context in both the UK and the Island.

The program will conclude with a talk by the ministry of the Parish at approximately 4:05 that will look at the legacy of the settlers and what their voyage and struggles mean for the community today.

Come join us at St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, which is located at 5559 Route 20 in Springbrook, 5 min. by car west of the LM Montgomery birthplace on Route 20.  For further information, contact the Parish Office at 902-836-3303 or by email at sjcole61@gmail.com.
